For sale here is a BIG pair of vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling silver, brass, and black onyx Antelope design Mexican modernist screwback earrings designed by Estela Popowski in Taxco. Popowski was a jewish emigre from Poland who fled from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba with her parents and siblings in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of different Mexican silversmiths. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. These earrings were made during her time in Taxco, and each measures 2" long by 1-1/8" wide, and the pair weigh a hefty 22.7 grams total. Marked "Popowski" and "Sterling" as shown, as well as additional marks as shown. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and some tarnish in spots as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
