For sale here is a wonderful original pencil and crayon drawing from 1928 by the German artist, A. Hubert. This drawing was acquired directly from the artist by Eric Locke, the gallery owner, in Germany, and was in his personal collection until his death in 1969, at which time it, along with many other artworks, was put in storage until recently. Dr. Locke had worked in Hollywood for Ernst Lubitsch on the MGM movie "Old Heidelberg" in 1926, and had a career for many years in Hollywood, before retiring and moving on to his first love, the fine arts. This drawing is a lovely seated nude, and is signed and dated by the artist in pencil on the front. Measures 8" by 10" image area, with the frame measures 12-1/2" by 14-1/2". It was re-framed sometime in the early 1960s, and still bears Eric Locke's notes on the back. Excellent vintage condition, with some slight wear to the frame as expected - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.

This is one of several vintage original artworks that I am listing in my store. I have acquired this artwork from the estate of former gallery owner Eric Locke of the Eric Locke Gallery in San Francisco. Originally born in Germany in 1887, Eric Locke's father was a high-court judge, and his mother was a German aristocrat at the court of Kaiser Willhelm. In 1923 Eric Locke moved to Hollywood where he was given a part in the silent epic "Merry-Go-Round" by the great Eric von Stroheim. For several years after that he was the personal assistant to Ernst Lubitch, the famous German producer. In 1952 he moved to San Francisco, and shortly after that opened his gallery in an old Victorian mansion. The Eric Locke Gallery was famous in it's day for championing the graphics arts by established and up and coming artists from around the world, and was one of only two galleries in San Francisco that sold graphic arts when it opened, the other being the world-famous Gumps. They were also famous for having modernist sculpture shows that drew talent from around the world and included some of the great local Bay area talent of that era as well including Pete Macchiarini. The Eric Locke gallery was open from 1955 to 1965, though all the artworks were acquired prior to 1964, when the proprietor had a stroke and was no longer able to run the business. After closing the gallery in 1965, these artworks were placed in storage until the present. Eric Locke passed away in 1969 at the age of 82. The California Historical Society Repository in San Francisco has 10 boxes of paperwork and ephemera from the Eric Locke Gallery in their collections and further information is available on their website.
