For sale here is a BIG and quite substantial vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling and brass with black onyx Mexican modernist brooch designed by Stella Popowski (1931-2008, USA). Incredible entirely handmade striking design modernist brooch of a woman staring into a moon figure that looks like it has an eye that is staring back at her! Popowski was a jewish emigre from Poland who fled from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba with her parents and siblings in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo and Antonio Pineda before opening her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of Mexican silversmiths for her shop. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. This brooch measures 2-1/2" by 1-7/8" and weighs a hefty 30.6 grams total. Marked at back as shown with designer mark, "Popowski" also "Sterling" and additional marks for the silversmith as well as an Eagle mark 23. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
