For sale here is a RARE vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist platter artwork by American enamelist/silversmith Lillian Skaggs of Portland Oregon. Skaggs, as far as I know no relation to H. Fred Skaggs of Arizona, was a silversmith, enamelist, artist and sculptor working in Portland in the 1950s to 1970s period. Her enamel work was featured in Polly Rothenberg’s 1969 book “Metal Enameling” and several of her pieces are shown in that book. Most of her enamel pieces that I have seen are the abstract expressionist variety of non-figurative splashes and spots of colors that many other enamelists of the period also created, but this one piece by her that I am listing today is quite different and refreshing compared to many of her pieces. It looks more like a weird almost melted honeycomb pattern over a background that shades from bright at center to darker along the rim. Striking and modernist and so unusual! See my last photo which is of the artist from the 1960s showing her in front of her enamel artwork "The Three Wise Men" and wearing a cross and chain necklace of her own making. Measures 5-7/8" diameter and weighs 206 grams or about 1/2 pound prior to packaging. Signed at back "Skaggs" as shown. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear at bottom but no damage or loss to the enamel whatsoever as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
