For sale here is a RARE vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and rosewood Mexican modernist belt buckle by Sigi Pineda (1929-2018) of Taxco. A younger cousin of Antonio Pineda, Sigi started as an apprentice in the Los Castillo workshop in the 1940s, and later worked for Margot (de Taxco) as her shop foreman before opening his own shop in 1952 in Taxco. His jewelry designs were heavily influenced by the international modernist movement of the time including modernist jewelry designers in the US and Europe. I met Sigi a few times in the 1990s and early 2000's, and he was a wonderful very friendly and very generous person. One of the things I remember most about Sigi is that he was not just a jewelry designer, his drawings for his designs were artworks themselves! My second last photo is of Sigi from his last couple decades. This belt buckle measures 2.75" x 1.25" and weighs a super hefty 45.7 grams total. It is marked “Sigi Tasco Sterling Hecho en Mexico” with Eagle 36 and design number “52”. This piece was originally owned by Arnold Crane (1932-2014), an American collector and photographer of global renown, and is from his estate. From the 1950’s through the 1990’s, Crane enjoyed unparalleled access to such giants as Man Ray, Walker Evans, Ansel Adams and Edward Steichen and many others. His photography collection was the largest in the world at that time and became the lynchpin acquisition of a special wing of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His collections of African, Oceanic and Native American art are well-known. He was also an early collector of Mexican silver from Taxco, and his collection included works by Spratling, Los Castillo, Hector Aguilar, Salvador Teran, and Sigi, among others. His own photographic artwork is found in the permanent collections of the Met, MOMA and the Art Institute of Chicago. My last photo is of Crane in the last years of his life. This belt buckle was originally purchased by Crane directly from Sigi in Taxco in the 1950s, and it was in his collection until his death in 2014, and I just recently acquired it from his estate. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
