For sale here is a RARE and one of a kind vintage 1940s 50s handmade matchstick sweetheart box from the US. Likely made by a sailor or soldier for his sweetheart, and no doubt entirely handmade throughout including a vibrant orange and gold geometric fabric (looks like silk!) lining and a small oval mirror inside. These boxes were often made in the trenches or aboard ship when the men had a great deal of time in between battles, and their thoughts turned to home and their loved ones. They were constructed of used wooden matches that were arranged in an attractive design that gave the boxes this variegated look. This box measures 8.25" by 6.5" by 4-1/8" tall, and weighs 762.5 grams or about 2 pounds prior to packaging. I purchased two of these from an estate, and both are now listed in my store here on Ruby Lane. No markings as expected. In absolutely wonderful vintage condition with just minimal wear at bottom edges as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
