For sale here is a wonderful and whimsical vintage 1950s 60s handmade mixed metals sterling silver brass black onyx and turquoise Mexican modernist Cat design brooch pin by artist/designer Miguel Garcia Martinez of Taxco. Martinez was the principal designer at Rancho Alegre in the 1950s and 60s, and he later produced his own designs that were made by a variety of silversmiths in Taxco for several decades. He was among the most prolific designers in the history of Taxco, and his career spanned the 1950s thru the 1990s. This is a charming example from early in his career, and done in the metales casados technique aka married metals in sterling silver brass and with black onyx and turquoise stones. The metales casados technique was among the most difficult metalworking techniques in use in Taxco at the time, and only a few of the most talented and competent metalsmiths were capable of it. In addition, it took a great deal more time to produce an item in metales casados, and thus was necessarily more expensive for the customer. This fine example measures 2-1/8" by 1-5/8" and weighs 16.8 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Mexico 0.925 Miguel 028", with the last number, 028, being the design number (an early design). Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and some tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
