For sale here is an original vintage 1950s signed and numbered modernist landscape 4 color lithograph titled "Cliffs" by German artist/painter Rudolf Weissauer (1924-1996). The lithograph was originally purchased directly from the artist by Eric Locke of the Eric Locke Gallery in San Francisco. Here is a biography of the artist that I found online:

Rudolf Weissauer, born in Munich in 1924, is considered an important German painter and graphic artist of the post-war period. From 1945 to 1949 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Extensive study trips to the USA, Mexico, France and Greece followed. His annual trips to Iceland, lasting several months, were certainly his most important source of inspiration. In 1951 the works of the young artist were exhibited for the first time in Philadelphia / USA. Other solo and group exhibitions followed in quick succession: at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in the Munich House of Art. In 1965 Rudolf Weissauer received the Hans Thoma Medal for special artistic merits. The motifs of his pictures, which he himself calls "imaginary landscapes", appear dark and magical like real dreams. They are visual worlds that are full of moods and perceived meaning. Tempera, watercolor and pastel drawing, lithography and aquatint etching predominate as techniques. Rudolf Weissauer died in 1996 in Burg auf Femahrn, where he lived and worked for two to three months every year. His work is in the collections of museums and private collectors worldwide, including: Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Library of Congress, Collection Prefecture de la Seine in Paris, Städtische Kunstsammlung in Aarhus Dänemark, Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz, Collection Camille Renault in Paris, the München Graphische Sammlung, Kunstsammlung der Stadt Düsseldorf, and the Albertina Wien.

My last photograph is a photo taken of the artist around the time he made this artwork circa late 1950s. This artwork measures 19-1/2" by 15-1/4" at the outer edges of the paper. It is signed in pencil by the artist at front bottom right as shown. There are also gallery notes at back which include the title of this artwork, "Cliffs", and that it is number 1 of an edition of 200. This lithograph is not dated but I know that it was made by the artist in the late 1950s about 1957-59. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear, some yellowing to the paper, and some spotting on the backside which doesn't show at all from the front as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.

This artwork has never been framed, and will ship rolled in a tube unless you request flat shipping which will be an additional charge. Please inquire if this is your preference.

I acquired this vintage lithograph from the estate of the former gallery owner Eric Locke of San Francisco. Eric Locke was born in Germany where he studied acting and filmmaking, and he moved to Hollywood in the late 1920s where he worked on many of the movies made by the German director Ernst Lubitsch. He was also the personal assistant to Lubitsch for many years. After retiring from the film industry after WWII, he moved to San Francisco where he opened his art gallery. The Eric Locke Gallery was famous in it's day for championing the graphics arts by up and coming artists from the Bay Area and from around the world, and was one of only two galleries in San Francisco that sold graphic arts when it opened, the other being the world-famous Gumps. Locke also did Summer Sculpture shows which included many of the Bay Area Metal Arts Guild membership including works by Peter Macchiarini and Margaret de Patta. The Eric Locke gallery was open from 1955 to 1965, though all the artworks were acquired prior to 1964, when the proprietor had a stroke and was no longer able to run the business himself. After closing the gallery in 1965, these artworks were placed in storage until the present. I purchased them from the long-time partner of Eric Locke just before his death in Palm Springs in 2015.
