For sale here is a rare original 1940s oil on canvas painting by California artist Emil J. Hugentobler. Here's a short bio of the artist...
Born in Switzerland on April 29, 1892. Hugentobler settled in San Francisco in 1919 after serving in WWI. A self-taught artist, he was active in the local art scene and made many painting excursions into Yosemite and northern California. He worked as both artist and watchmaker until his death at the local Veteran's Hospital on Dec. 28, 1964. The artist also signed his works Emil Tobler. (from Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940")
The subject of the painting looks to be some type of farm building in full daylight, and is marked on the back "Made by E.J. Hugentobler, June 28, 1945". I'm guessing a farm building somewhere inland from the artists San Francisco home, perhaps in the Imperial Valley which is the bread basket of California and the US. A petite painting, the canvas on stretcher measures just 8" by 11" and fits loosely in the painted-black wood frame that measures 16" by 12-7/8", and may or may not be the original frame. The painting is in good overall condition, but with edge wear that will probably disappear when framed, and some chipping to the paint along the edges especially in the signature area. Signed at front bottom right as shown in my closeup photo - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
