For sale here is a BIG pair of vintage 1950s 60s handmade mixed metals sterling silver copper and onix negro (inlaid black onyx) Mexican modernist Fish cufflinks designed by Estela Popowski (1931-2008, USA) in Taxco. Popowski was a jewish emigre from Poland who fled from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba with her parents and siblings in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of different Mexican silversmiths. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. These cufflinks are from her time in Taxco, and they measure 1-1/8" in diameter and the pair weigh a hefty 20 grams total. Marked as shown, "Popowski Sterling" and additional marks by the silversmith she commissioned to make her designs. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
