For sale here is a BIG vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling silver brass black onyx and green stone inlay modernist design brooch and earrings set designed by Stella Popowski in Mexico. Popowski was a European jewish emigre who fled Europe to Cuba in the late 1930s, and left Cuba for Mexico in the late 1940s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself in her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry and had it executed by a number of different silversmiths in Taxco. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. The brooch measures 2-1/4" diameter, and the earrings measure 1-1/4" diameter. The set weighs a hefty 58.8 grams total. Marked as shown, "Popowski Sterling" and Eagle 27. Additional markings are for the silversmith that produced her design. (These silversmiths also worked for other designers as well as themselves, so their marks on an item don't indicate that it's a Popowski design.) Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and some tarnish to the metal as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
