For sale here is a RARE huge early vintage 1960s handmade geometric 900 silver geometric modernist kinetic design pendant collar necklace by internationally acclaimed artist Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) of Ecuador. Sometimes referred to as "the Picasso of the Andes", Guayasamin is an internationally recognized artist and sculptor of the highest caliber, and his jewelry is wearable sculpture! His artwork is held in major museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The huge pendant resembles an anchor with three sets of branches at top from which hang a total of twelve round drops that move and shimmer when worn. I have a fair amount of experience with the jewelry of Guayasamin, and this is the first time I have had this necklace! It's rarity, it's generous size, and the quality of the design all combine to make this a collector's coup! The pendant measures 3-5/8" long by 2-1/2" wide, and hangs on a 16" wearable collar necklace. Total weight for the pendant necklace is just over 50 grams. The pendant is marked as shown, "Guayasamin 900" with the hand-engraved mark, not stamped. This is his earliest mark for his pieces made in the early 1960s. Later in the 1960s, they went to stamped marks, and the pieces marked "Taller Guayasamin" were made from the 1980s to the present. (See my article about the artist in the archive section of Modern Silver magazine online from 2012 - though Modern Silver is no longer online directly, you can still read the article using the Wayback machine, an internet archive - see information on Wikipedia.) The collar is marked "Mexico 925", and is a perfect match for the pendant in scale and style. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
