For sale here is a rare original vintage 1940s handmade six-color Bakelite "Baby Cannibal" Tykie Toy infant crib toy in it's original box with original company brochure. A true collectors item, it's a wonder to find them all together, and in such great shape! This model was named "Baby Cannibal" by the company in the 1947 original brochure that came in this original box, and is the only character in the brochure depicting a black person. Although I've seen it before, it's quite rare, and probably one of the hardest of the characters to find. Multiply that by a hundred given the original packaging etc! Here's a short history of the Tykie Toy company that I found online...

"The first Tykie toys were produced by Richard B. and Sarah L. Grosvenor in their home in Piqua, Ohio. The couple made the toys when their son, Michael, nicknamed "Tykie," began teething. Grosvenor worked in the accounting department of the Piqua Hosiery Company until the business was absorbed by one of the other four underwear factories in the city. Grosvenor then organized a family business to manufacture toys. The business operated out of the former machine shop of Grosvenor's father, and the family lived upstairs. By 1944, the firm had fifteen employees and was shipping their products to Saks in New York and Marshall Field's in Chicago. Product names included "Baby Bunny," "Tom-Tom- Rattles" and "Billy the Bellboy." After World War II, the company expanded but production was brought to a halt during the coal strike of 1946, since the Catalin plastic used in the toys was made from coal tar. Tykie Toys re-opened in 1947 and continued to manufacture toys until around 1952."

The baby cannibal measures 6-1/4" tall including the string and spheres at top by 2-1/2" at widest by 1" at thickest point (the head), and is composed of various Bakelite parts in a total of six colors including black, green, red, yellow, orange, and butterscotch, and has hand-painted features on the 'face'. Excellent vintage condition with just very slight signs of wear to the crib toy itself, and some very light wear to the outside of the box but it is complete with no tears or holes and the brochure is also complete although it has yellowed slightly with age - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
