For sale here is a BIG pair of vintage 1950s Mexican modernist cufflinks by Stella Popowski (1931-2008, USA) in sterling silver with brass, black onyx and Azur-malachite stone inlay. An intriguing mid-century modernist abstracted design including a fish, as star, and a black sun . Popowski was a jewish emigre from Poland who fled from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba with her parents and siblings in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo and Antonio Pineda before opening her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of different silversmiths in Taxco. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. These cufflinks are from her time in Taxco, and each measures 1-1/4" diameter at fronts, and the pair weigh a hefty 27.1 grams total. Fully marked as shown with "Popowski" maker mark, also "Sterling", Eagle 23, and additional marks for the silversmith who made them them to her specifications. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
