For sale here is a HUGE vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling silver brass and black onyx inlay Mexican modernist pendant by Estela Popowski of Taxco. A powerful design of two figures underneath a star with the usual superlative craftsmanship! Popowski was a jewish emigre (most likely from Poland) who fleed from the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of other Mexican silversmiths. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. Pendant measures 3-1/2" by 2" wide, and weighs a hefty 37.5 grams total or well over a full troy ounce! Marked at back as shown, "Popowski Sterling Hecho en Mexico" and Eagle 20, plus additional marks for the silversmith she contracted to execute her designs in Taxco. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
