For sale here is an original late 1950s early 1960s abstract modernist color etching by Czech/French artist, sculptor, etc Terry Haass titled "Temple Deserte" and numbered 59/60 and made during her years at Atelier Lacouriere & Frelaut in Paris. Her work is always very visually exciting, and her pieces are much sought-after for this reason. Here's a short bio of the artist...
Tereza (Terry) Haass, printmaker, painter, and sculptor, was born in Cesky Tesin, Czechoslovakia on November 17, 1923. She fled her native country and Nazism in the late 1930s, relocating to France. In Paris, she studied art and art history until she was once again displaced by war. In 1941, she moved to New York and received a scholarship to the Art Students’ League where she studied with Will Barnet. Haass began working at Stanley William Hayter’s experimental workshop, Atelier 17, in 1946 and she directed the workshop in 1950 when Hayter returned to Paris. In 1951, Haass received a Wooley scholarship to study printmaking and a Fulbright Travel Grant that allowed her to visit Norway. She eventually settled in Paris where she worked at Atelier Lacourière & Frélaut. She studied at the school of the Louvre for many years. Her work is represented in major public collections including the Guggenheim Museum, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum, the Carnegie Institute, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bibliothéque nationale de France, and the Israel National Museum. There is a large collection of her works in the permanent collection of the Olomouc Museum of Art in Olomouc, Czech Rekpublic. In 2006 the museum organized an extensive retrospective by Haass titled "Light - Space - Time." The exhibition offered a profile of her work from the 1940s to the present. She exhibited her graphic works, paintings, sculptures and costume designs. Terry Haass died in Paris on March 1, 2016.
The sheet measures 26" by 19-3/4, and the image area is 19-1/4" by 15-3/8. It is signed in pencil, also numbered 59/60, and with title "Temple Deserte", along the bottom edge of the image area. There is a watermark at the bottom left of the sheet for the Atelier Lacouriere in Paris, and I have included a photo of it in the photos section. The print also notations at back from the gallery as shown in my photos. I've also included additional biographical information in a screen grab in the photos section - see my last photo. Excellent vintage condition with just very fine and light edge wear as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase.
This is one of several vintage original graphic artworks that I am listing in my store. I have acquired this artwork, along with many other works of graphic art, from the estate of a former gallery owner Eric Locke from San Francisco. Originally born in Germany in 1887, Eric Locke's father was a high-court judge, and his mother was a German aristocrat at the court of Kaiser Willhelm. In 1923 Eric Locke moved to Hollywood where he was given a part in the silent epic "Merry-Go-Round" by the great Eric von Stroheim. For several years after that he was the personal assistant to Ernst Lubitch, the famous German producer. In 1952 he moved to San Francisco, and shortly after that opened his gallery in an old Victorian mansion. The Eric Locke Gallery was famous in it's day for championing the graphics arts by established and up and coming artists from around the world, and was one of only two galleries in San Francisco that sold graphic arts when it opened, the other being the world-famous Gumps. They were also famous for having modernist sculpture shows that drew talent from around the world and included some of the great local Bay area talent of that era as well. The Eric Locke gallery was open from 1955 to 1965, though all the artworks were acquired prior to 1964, when the proprietor had a stroke and was no longer able to run the business. After closing the gallery in 1965, these artworks were placed in storage until the present. Eric Locke passed away in 1969 at the age of 82. I have a fair number of photographs of old exhibition advertising, newspaper clippings and other ephemera for this gallery and a number of the artists it represented, and am willing to share this material with serious buyers who have an interest.
