For sale here is a fine original vintage 1950s or early 60s untitled intaglio relief "graphisculpture" print signed and numbered in pencil by famed artist Paolo Boni (1926-). A major twentieth century Italian artist, Paolo Boni studied art in Florence, Venice and Rome and is equally accomplished in the fields of painting, sculpture and original printmaking. Paolo Boni began exhibiting his abstract art shortly after the end of World War II and since then his work in all media has been exhibited in Rome, Berlin, Paris, London, New York, Chicago and elsewhere. He has also received numerous world wide commissions, including many from American institutions. Beginning in 1957, Paolo Boni received international recognition for a printmaking process which he developed and called, 'Graphisculptures'. Briefly, these were multi-leveled relief prints arduously constructed by cutting and shaping different metals and individually inking and printing each in relation to the other. Pencil signed and numbered at bottom as shown. Outer edges of sheet measure 15" by 11", the image area is 5-1/2" by 3-3/4". Original gallery label on back with title "Petite Mauve", and acquisition date of December 1962, so I'm guessing that this was done at most a few years prior and most likely just the year before. Excellent vintage condition with some very slight edge wear as shown but everything will disappear when this print is framed - see my photos for close-ups. This artwork has never been framed and will ship rolled in a tube.

This is one of several vintage original graphic artworks that I am listing in my store. I have acquired this artwork, along with many other works of graphic art, from the estate of a former gallery owner Eric Locke from San Francisco. Originally born in Germany in 1887, Eric Locke's father was a high-court judge, and his mother was a German aristocrat at the court of Kaiser Willhelm. In 1923 Eric Locke moved to Hollywood where he was given a part in the silent epic "Merry-Go-Round" by the great Eric von Stroheim. For several years after that he was the personal assistant to Ernst Lubitch, the famous German producer. In 1952 he moved to San Francisco, and shortly after that opened his gallery in an old Victorian mansion. The Eric Locke Gallery was famous in it's day for championing the graphics arts by established and up and coming artists from around the world, and was one of only two galleries in San Francisco that sold graphic arts when it opened, the other being the world-famous Gumps. They were also famous for having modernist sculpture shows that drew talent from around the world and included some of the great local Bay area talent of that era as well. The Eric Locke gallery was open from 1955 to 1965, though all the artworks were acquired prior to 1964, when the proprietor had a stroke and was no longer able to run the business. After closing the gallery in 1965, these artworks were placed in storage until the present. Eric Locke passed away in 1969 at the age of 82. I have a fair number of photographs of old exhibition advertising, newspaper clippings and other ephemera for this gallery and a number of the artists it represented, and am willing to share this material with serious buyers who have an interest.
