For sale here is a whimsical and wonderful vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling silver brass and black onyx modernist Chicken Rooster set of brooch pin with matching earrings designed Estela Popowski in Taxco Mexico. Popowski was a jewish emigre (most likely from Poland) who flees the Nazis in Europe by moving to Cuba in the 1940s, and then to Mexico in the 1950s. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry but had it made by a number of local silversmiths in Taxco. In the mid-1960s she moved to California where she lived in Newport Beach while concentrating on painting and design projects. The brooch measures 1-5/8" by 1-5/8", the earrings measure 7/8" by 3/4" each, and the set weighs 24.9 grams total. The brooch and one earring are marked "Popowski Sterling", and additional markings are for the silversmith that produced her design in this instance. (These silversmiths also worked for other designers as well as themselves, so their marks on an item don't indicate that it's a Popowski design.) Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear and tarnish as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
