For sale here is a BIG pair of vintage 1950s handmade multicolor copper enamel abstract modernist screwback earrings by African-American artist enamelist Sterling Vance Hykes (1917-1974) of Cleveland. Hykes was born in Tennessee, and moved to Cleveland at a young age where he worked as a dishwasher to put himself through art school. Hykes studied enameling with Kenneth Bates, and metalworking with Mildred Watkins. He worked in ceramics, enameling, painting, and sculpture over the course of his 30+ year career in the arts. These earrings measure 7/8" square, and the pair weigh 12.3 grams total. Marked "Hykes" at backs as shown. Excellent vintage condition with fine light wear and no damage to enamel as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase.
