Detailed Description:
This is a wonderful example of a Staffordshire Pottery Dog. With a design that shows the essence of English cottage style.
Produced using simple mould with a great deal of hand modeling, the attention to detail in the hand finishing is done very well, creating a most pleasant piece.
Using semi-translucent glaze and an opaque enameled rust color along with black and gilding details. The piece has a shallow foot ring that is glazed, along with the bottom surface being glazed. It also has a smooth and slick texture to it. With gentle crazing and some wear to the enamels and gilding. the mold lines are slightly visible.

An intriguing legend follows Staffordshire Dog Figurines. The Victorian tale is, that spaniel figurines placed on the windowsill delivered a secret message. A woman would place the figures in her front window; if they were back to back, it meant her husband was in residence. If the dogs faced each other, it meant her husband was out at sea, thus welcoming her lover in to the house.

The production information of many of the smaller Staffordshire pottery manufactures has been been deprived of its place in the history of ceramics. This is due to the fact that many were not properly marked, and frequent “borrowing” or copying of each others work, thus making it very difficult for definite attribution of much of the wares produced.
