Here's an offer that is a rare opportunity for a collector of fine children's books illustration art. Offering this stunning pair of original matching paintings by the well known New Jersey illustrator/artist Albert Hencke. Hencke was one of the greats of American turn-of-the-century book illustration, especially of children's books. His works appeared in many of the prominent magazines of the day. His various subjects run the full rage, however he is best remembered for his works featuring children. Each of these paintings 16 1/4 by 26 1/4 and both are offered unframed as found. I would expect these paintings to date to around 1920 give or take. Each is signed by the artist.
Both are done on canvas which has been fixed to a cardboard backing. Condition is very good with one note being a visible fold mark in the upper right corner of the painting with the young boy. This could easily be left as is for display or very easily repaired by a competent restorer. The colors are very bold and bright with the subject "popping" from the surface. They look even better in person. You will not disappointed with the pair and you will probably never see another opportunity to buy a matching pair like this by the artist.
Both of these paintings were reproduced as prints sold by the The United States Printing and Lithograph Company, based in New York City, NY. The pair are featured in a company catalog in 1928. These prints were very popular at the time and can still be seen occasionally in antique stores and estate sales. This pair are the originals from which the reproductions were made.
