Charles Frederick Surendorf [1906-1979] was a painter and printmaker born in Indiana and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. He moved to San Francisco Bay Area in 1935 where he was active in the art scene. In 1946 , he settled in Columbia, California in the Sierra foothills. He produced works with an historic California theme of the rough and tumble life of the old mining country somewhat in a regionalist style like Thomas Hart Benton. His style is readily identifiable with his use of vibrant colors and bold compositions done in an expressionist manner. He was a member of the California Society of Etchers and the San Francisco Art Association. He exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the de Young Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design.
