Title: 19th Century American Church Drawing
Medium: colored pencil/ink wash
Size: 6 ¾ by 8 ¾ sight area, 10 1/8 by 12 1/8 inches overall including the outer edges of the mat
Description: Skillfully executed original drawing of a rural church framed by columns, an arch, and an alter. The words, “ The Lord is in His Temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him” are scribed in the foreground on the altar. Note the dove surrounded by light at the top of the arch. It is possible this work was done as an original illustration for some type of church publication. It is a very unique piece and is fully guaranteed to be well over 100 years old. My estimate of age is around 1880 based on the materials used, the frame it was found in (beyond repair), and the fact it had a 19th century wood backing with square nails. A great gift or a nice decorative piece. Very charming.
Condition: Overall good condition, a few soil marks and pits in the surface typical of a work this age. Take note of the pitted area near the top of the arch. Overall, the piece presents well and would look great properly framed. It does show its age and thus has a wonderful antique look.
Frame: This piece is sold unframed.
