19th century French earthenware oil/water storage jug. Beautifully simple household object – a hand-thrown bulbous terracotta cruche with tapering form, double-handled and with short anchored spout. Rich, dark chocolate treacle glaze both inside and out. Good antique condition with visible firing flaws and glaze imperfections which contributes to its uniqueness. Wear to the body and glaze in the form of chips, flakes, and a faint hairline in the top rim, further adds character and is consistent with age and function. No restoration.
Size: 10” high. Girth is 28”.
