Framed 19th century R. Ackermann engraved print “Satisfactory Explanation” from “Merry Memoranda, No 1.” dated April 1st, 1830. A Georgian era social comment on marriage unions, it features a doctor paying a house call to a gentleman and his wife. The caption reads “Pray doctor, can you inform me why my wife is confined six months after marriage? Oh, my dear sir, it sometimes happens with the first child; but never afterwards.” The engraving comes in an antique gilded frame with a brass hanging loop affixed to the top. The protective cover at the back is loose, but otherwise the frame and print are in very good antique condition with acceptable age-related wear. Size: 9” x 9”.
