Fabulous collection of vintage Eton Fives balls in their original calico bag. English, c.1920s. These are both tactile and visually pleasing objects that are not only relevant to the collector of sporting goods, but also to the decorator. Faded print on the bag indicates that these originate from “Jefferies & Malings” who, since the Victorian times, were suppliers of bats, balls, rackets etc. There are 21 balls in total (about the size of golf balls). Each is hand-stitched together using four segments of soft white kid-leather. With the exception of one unused ball, the remainder have been used. Of the ones used, two are tattered, and provide insight into how they were made (as shown).
