This is a stunning early Simon Halbig bisque head doll. She is the open mouth 719 head on an antique gusseted kid leather body. The open mouth version of the 719 mold was first made in 1885-1887 for a doll with the Edison record player in it's metal torso. The open mouth became popular and was used on normal dolls as well. The 719 head is usually seen on an early French composition body. This doll is on a less often seen kid leather gusseted body with a separate shoulder plate. The body is an early style with deep gussets like that seen on BRU's or Juneau's. In this time period many French makers bought heads from other French and German makers. They would add their body and clothes and sell the doll under their name. Simon Halbig also made dolls using these heads and sold them in Germany and worldwide. It is unclear who originally sold this doll but the body style points more to a French maker.
The doll is wearing an amazing outfit professionally made for her. It is made using vintage and antique material and trims. She has a replacement wig, pate, shoes and socks.
The doll is 18 inches tall
The head is marked as follows: S9H 719 DEP
Condition of Doll for Sale
The bisque head is perfect with no chips, cracks, rubs or repaint. The wax on the eyes is intact but the eyes do not close completely. The bisque shoulder plate is cracked on the front and the back. The bisque hands are vintage / antique replacements. The leather on the body is soft and the seams are tight. The feet have been replaced or recovered. There are well done patches on the hip and knee joints with no sawdust leakage. There are some red stains mainly on the back of the body. The clothes are in good shape with no foxing, stains, rips or repairs. The back of the overdress has darkened some.
Note: For bisque head dolls I use USPS "Special Handling Fragile" service which provides separate handling for packages. The charge is $11.15 which is added to the insurance charge in the Ruby Lane shipping summary. I feel this extra charge is appropriate to insure trouble free shipping of your fragile purchases.
