Description of Orphan Annie Doll for Sale
This is a beautiful example of a vintage Ralph A. Freundlich, Little Orphan Annie doll. Little Orphan Annie was a comic strip by Harold
Gray that began in 1924 and ran for 44 years. The heroine was a little girl who had all types of adventures. This Little Orphan Annie was made by Freundlich and is all-composition, jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips. She has molded hair, painted yellow with black highlights, round painted blue eyes with large black pupils, and no eyelashes or eyebrows. She was made in 10", 12", 14" sizes. This Orphan Annie doll is the at 12 inch version. She is wearing her original dress, onesie underwear, shoes and socks. Freundlich made this doll throughout the 1930's.
This Little Orphan Annie doll is unmarked as were most Freundlich dolls.
Condition of Little Orphan Annie Doll for Sale
The head, arms and legs have factory original paint. On the torso the paint appears to be original but there appears to be some rough spots and chips that have been painted over. It may be that the torso, which is not normally seen, had a rougher finish when it was made resulting in the appearance of being repainted. There is a spot that was touched up on one shoulder joint. The paint on one of the leg seams is worn. The composition in this area is sound and does not appear to be splitting. There are some composition cracks to Annie's head. One is at the hairline on the face. There are some more on the back of the head in the hair. There are also some pinholes in the back of the hair. The pin holes may be from the factory? The face painting including the eyes and lips is all original. There is some very minor paint wear to the eyes and a minor nose rub. The face would benefit from some very gentle cleaning. The fingers and toes have minor paint wear. The soles of the feet have a rough finish. Annie's clothes are all original. The dress is sound with no rips, fraying or repairs. There is some yellowing and minor staining. Annie's onesie is intact with no rips or repairs. Some of the unfinished edges are fraying. The shoes and socks are original. The shoes snaps are intact and work. There is no splits or chips to the oilcloth material, The socks have no rips or fraying but are very yellowed with some minor stains.
