Description of Doll for Sale
I am pleased to have for sale an antique French Jumeau bebe doll from the late 1800's. The doll was made in France by Jumeau using a head that they contracted Simon & Halbig to fire for them. The doll is on a French Jumeau bebe body and was sold by Jumeau. Jumeau turned to Simon & Halbig to make the head for this doll because their kiln was not big enough to fire all the heads they needed for their popular Tete Jumeau dolls. This doll is often referred to as a "DEP Jumeau" because the head was made in Germany and is marked DEP to comply with French import laws. This doll was sold concurrently with the Jumeau dolls with the French made and marked Tete Jumeau heads.
The doll is 26 - 27 inches tall and has wonderful blown glass eyes. This doll is what is referred to as a "Parlant" (speaking) doll. It has a Mama Papa voice box controlled by two strings on the side of the torso. The voice box appears to be intact and you can feel the mechanism work the bellows when the strings are pulled but no discernible sound can be heard. Most likely the leather bellows are cracked. One of the beads on the pull strings has been replaced. She has a vintage dress, wig and shoes. It looks like she was redressed as a German girl sometime in the early to mid 1900's. The dress is well made in a very German style and fits her nicely. The body has been repainted probably at the same time she was redressed.
This Jumeau bebe doll is wearing a set of underwear which consists of a full slip and a pair of bloomers. The full slip is made from fine antique cotton lace trimmed material. It is not clear when they were made. She has a good quality replacement German styled human hair wig that has a lot of thinning on the top and back of the wig. She is also wearing vintage replacement shoes and socks. One of the shoes is missing it's buckle.
The head is marked with "DEP" and the size mark 12.
