Description of Simon & Halbig 1249 Doll for Sale
This is a beautiful example of a bisque head character faced doll made in Germany by Simon & Halbig. This doll is their 1249 mold that is commonly referred to as Santa and is 20 inches tall. The Santa name was only used for dolls sold in the US. While it is often said that only the 18 inch version of this doll was originally sold with the Santa name most collectors refer to all dolls with the 1249 head as being a Santa. In addition I have seen a few different sized heads marked with the Santa name so it looks like they did use the Santa name on other sized dolls. The 1249 design was first registered in 1898 and was sold throughout the early 1900's. Santa has pierced ears, an open mouth with inset teeth and glass sleep eyes.
She is wearing a cotton dress with a wonderfully made pink cotton smock over it. They are made from vintage to antique fabric but appear to be hand made. The smock appears to have been washed and pressed more than one so it may have been on the doll for a while. Certainly the style is appropriate for the early 1900's. She has a vintage replacement synthetic wig. She is wearing a vintage slip and bloomers under the dress. The undies appear to be factory. She is wearing a very detailed pair of replacement leather shoes and vintage rayon socks. .
The head is marked as follows:
S & H 1249 // DEP // Germany // 8
