Description of Gaultier Doll for Sale
This is a stunning example of a very large (30-32 inches) antique French Fashion doll (Poupee) with a bisque head made in France by Francois Gaultier. The shoulder plate is marked with the FG scroll mark. The head has the size mark of 10. Both are antique and are in pristine condition with no hairlines or repairs.
The head is known as the "Early Bebe Type." the head has the shape and expression of an adult face but features larger lips and thicker brows with rounder eye cuts that give her more of a teenage (Bebe) look than the stern older adult face of the classic Poupee. She would date from the mid to late 1870's.
The doll is on a near pristine antique gusseted kid Poupee body. The body is made from high quality kid leather with incredibly fine hand stitching on the seams and gussets. The feet even have individual stitched toes. The leather is not discolored or stained. The quality of the leather and the workmanship on the body is as good if not better than that seen on BRU gusseted bodies. The doll wears a gold filled bracelet and a bracelet set with tiny cut stones.
The doll is wearing an elaborate antique reproduction dress made by Mary Stolz. Mary Stolz had a doll shop and museum in Stroudsburg PA. She also published articles on doll costuming. The dress is made with vintage and antique materials and trim. The dress is fully lined and features extensive hand sewing. The dress is cut and styled exactly like a dress from a French courtier workshop in 1870's Paris. The details and workmanship is so good the dress could almost be mistaken for an antique original were it not for the label. The dress was custom made for this doll and it is possible the doll was part of the auction of the museum stock that occurred after the museum closed.
The doll is wearing an antique slip and bloomers. The slip is made from very fine cotton material and has a lot of hand sewing. The slip is likely original to the doll. The bloomers are also antique but do not match the lace on the slip.
During the early 1800's Francois Gaultier made heads for many French doll makers. The doll makers added a body, wig and clothes and sold the resulting doll under their name. Some of these heads were marked for the company commissioning the heads but most had the generic Gaultier scroll marks like this doll.
