This is a 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" 1906 T. Eaton's Spring and Summer Catalogue, No 74. It is an amazing treasure trove of vintage fashion, furniture, and period pieces. While this edition is often used as an example of antique department store mail order catalogues in digital collections, the complete original paper catalogue is very rare. This delightful 113 year-old mail order catalogue from the T. Eaton company in Toronto is complete. The full-color front and back covers are loose and have creases, tears and edge wear. The rest of the 210 page catalogue is fully intact with some light page discoloration and creased corners.
The first Timothy Eaton's catalogue (Toronto) was distributed in the fall of 1884 at the annual Industrial Exhibition, precursor to the Canadian National Exhibition. At first orders were filled by mail-order "shoppers" who lined up to be served with other customers at Eaton's ever-expanding 190 Yonge Street, Toronto store. Records of the mail-order department, held at the Archives of Ontario, reveal the rise and fall of the mail-order industry in Canada.
