'Tyler' Bear-"S"-ence. Registration Number IAGM-39-MH-89. Handcrafted and Registered Teddy Bears by Steve Schutt.
Legend has it that on a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt did not shoot a bear. A well-known illustrator and political cartoonist Clifford Berryman thought this was newsworthy and started to draw Roosevelt Bear cartoons for the Washington Post. With the permission of President Roosevelt, Rose Michtom (later of the Ideal Toy Company) created the first Teddy Bear. Meanwhile in Germany, Margarete Steiff, who had been earlier stricken by polio, created a prototype of a toy bear for the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1903.
This delightful 14” golden mohair bear has an SS button on the back of his head. Tyler is shown on page 278 in “The Complete Book of Teddy Bears’ by Joan Greene and Ted Menten, Publications International, (1989). "Steve Schutt makes bears with so much love and attention to detail that they almost seem to be alive... Many of Steve's Bear-"S"-Ence bears are long legged and exceptionally tall...but the most distinctive quality of Steve's bears is the way they all seem to convey their maker's personality." This golden beauty has jointed arms, legs, and his head turns. He has shoe button eyes, soft plush 'leather' paw pads, and is wearing a Mexican leather shoulder bag which holds the SS tags. Tyler is in excellent condition.
