Peach Colored Hand-Stitched Embellished Lady's Organza Modified Sailor Hat
In the nineteenth century European sailors wore straw hats with flat crowns and brims, similar to those worn by Italian gondoliers. Around the same time, women and children started wearing a similarly shaped but larger brimmed hat known as the “sailor”. Women’s sailor hat designs often featured flowers around the base of the crown as well.
This hand-stitched 'Princess Beatrice' boater has a round crown and the brim is covered with horizontally gathered peach organza. The stiff hat form which is totally covered in peach organza is navy blue. There is a large four flower embellishment on the side of the front. The crown is 20" in circumference and the brim is 10" in diameter. The crown form is attached to the back of the larger hat form making the brim in the front larger. Although there is no label, this hand stitched delicate beauty is probably from the 1940s or 50s. There are a couple of tiny discolorations on the crown and some age on the soft flowers, but overall this vintage beauty is in good condition. Please be careful in measuring for the fit of this fine chapeau.
