This is a 1888 First Edition 'The Star of India' hardcover book by Edward S. Ellis, A.M. It was published by M. A. Donohue & Company, Chicago. There is a faded soldier silhouette illustrated on a cloth cover with white stamp titling front and spine. It is generally rubbed and soiled allover. It is 5" - 7¾" tall with 274 pages and 10 pages of advertising at the back. It is lovingly dedicated to Edward S. Ellis' children "each a Star of India to me". The hinges are slightly shaken but sound with illustrated endpapers. There is no dust jacket. It is in fair condition, with a pencil gifting 'Calvin from Mother'.
Edward Sylvester Ellis was an American author who was born in Ohio, and died at Cliff Island, Maine. He specialized in boys' stories, inspirational biography, and history for both children and adults. He was a major author during the era of inexpensive fiction of the nineteenth century (dime novels).
