Antique, Silver Plate, James W Tufts, Boston, Mass., Figural, Sporting Dog, Toothpick / Match, Holder. Circa 1880. Decorated Filigree Crown adorns the top. Number 2692. James Walker Tufts, ( 1835 - 1902 ) is known for his founding of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and for his development of a successful business in silver plate tableware. This piece is in very nice silvered condition for the age. Measures 2 1/2" H. The dog is 3 1/4" L. There is a slight bend to one slant of the crown above the dog's back. Toothpick holders were shared. A bit more rare than napkin rings. Originally designed as a toothpick holder, in today's world, I would also use this as a tea light holder. Another suggestion, would be a nice powder room accessory. Great Detail !
