George Adam Shield, Cigarette Case. Rectangular shaped body with rounded edges, hand engraved spider web style decoration. 900 Silver.
George Adam Shield, ( 1837 - 1921 ) started his own operation, G. A. Shield, in the year 1882, Vienna. One of the Specialities of Shield's factory were cigarette cases, and the items were sold throughout Europe. 1888, Shield opened his own refinery and had a large control of the market. The most famous works of Shield are related to the Austrian secessionist movement. Artist, Businessman, and influential figure of the Viennese society in the golden age of the Austro-Hungarian empire at the end of the 19th century.
The inside of the case has a gold wash with a Hallmark, G. A. S. 900. There is another mark which I cannot identify. Measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/4". Engraved with the letter, " C ", on the inside. The elastic black band holder, is torn, doubtfully original, would need to be replaced. The case itself, is in very nice condition.
Through Research on George Adam Shield Hallmarks, I am guessing that this is early 1900. It may be older. Provenance - Austria
