World War Two-II-2 Army Air Force Uniform Shoulder Patch Insignia - 2nd Air Force Golden Falcon - Guaranteed Vintage
World War Two (WW II-2) United States Army Air Force (AAF) uniform shoulder sleeve insignia patch worn by personnel of the Second Air Force. Passed examination under ultraviolet light. Made of natural fiber consistent with an authentic WWII vintage insignia, and was most likely manufactured in the United States during World War II. Acquired by us with other authentic WWII patches here in Connecticut, a center of textile production during the Second World War.
One of the four original pre-World War II numbered air forces, The Second Air Force was activated in October 1940, and based at McChord Field in Washington. Its mission during 1941 and early 1942 was air defense of the Northwest Pacific coastline and Upper Midwest regions. After Pearl Harbor, its primary mission was the organization and training of combat units and replacement crews prior to their deployment to the overseas combat air forces. In 1942, the Second Air Force became the training organization of B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator Heavy bombardment groups. In mid-1943 the training of B-17 and B-24 replacement crews was phased out, replaced by the training B-29 Super-Fortress Very Heavy bomb groups, destined for Twentieth Air Force.
This is the official 2nd Air Force insignia approved in December 1943, and described as follows: On a blue square, a golden orange falcon with jesses in striking attitude below a white star bearing a red disc.
Appears to be machine-stitched twill, and measures 2½" square.
CONDITION: In excellent condition, and whether or not actually used has not been determined. However, does not glow when examined under ultraviolet light, and appears to be made of all-natural fiber material, most likely of World War II vintage. All significant flaws are visible in photos.
