Pre Civil War hand-tinted daguerreotype of a somewhat dour, elderly woman in un-tied white bonnet, circa 1850s. Enclosed in wonderful floral design leather cover case trimmed with gold. Face has been hand-tinted. Image is surrounded with near pristine frame with lovely gold matting & trim. Inside cover is a lovely, vivid pattered red velvet.
Wonderful 1/6 plate image. Size of case is 3-5/8" by 3-1/8" - the daguerreotype is some what smaller.
PHOTO NOTE: Daguerreotypes do not photo well. Images are much sharper in closeup than in gallery view and, even better in person. The spots visible on the image in the photos are on the front of the glass, which I am told can be replaced for under $50.
CONDITION NOTE: Image and frame are in very good condition. Leather case shows some wear on one side. The two front clasps are intact & in good repair. However, the back spine has separated.
