1946 early Mobilgas Marine Products advertising publication “Harbor Guide Book 2 – Newport to Cape May” published by the Marine Sales Department of the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, Inc. A wonderful Atlantic Coast cruising harbor guide with information on 25 harbors from Newport, RI to New York and another 7 harbors from New York to Cape May NJ. A great unusual vintage postwar gasoline advertising piece!
Seventy-eight page guide features two area maps pin-pointing all Newport-New York-Cape May harbor locations keyed to individual pages in the book where detailed information is provided – including an aerial photo and a written description of harbor characteristics, together with information on “Fuel and Supplies” (including the closest “Mobilgas Marine” dealer), “Stores and Amusements”, facilities for marine “Repairs”, and available shoreside “Transportation”.
In the back are four great two-page black and white photo advertisements for Mobilgas products. Other features include a detailed index; chart of New Jersey Inland Waterways navigation aids; a list of available government navigation charts and publication; a picture guide of uniform buoys and markers; information on Atlantic coastal weather; a complete list of Mobilgas Marine dealer locations.
A very nice 9-3/4” x 6-1/4”booklet on high quality paper with heavy duty paper cover.
PHOTO NOTE: The washed out texture to some of the images is a photo distortion, altering the sharper textures of the images in the actual book. Photos also tend to exaggerate the prominence of lightly soiled spots and sun faded areas, as well as the size and texture of what are actually small creases and flaws, all of which are much less noticeable in person.
CONDITION NOTE: LOOK AT PHOTOS CAREFULLY. In generally excellent condition for its age. Complete, tightly bound with rust-free staples, cover and pages firmly attached. Inside pages are toned – light tan in color, but not brittle. No tears or creases in the pages or cover. Light cover wear and age discoloration front and back, and slightly blunted page corners. The lower corners of the last three pages and back cover are water-stained. Generalized wear and age discoloration on both covers - very light on the front, and more heavily on the back. The front cover has a small drop of unknown material residue starting in the right dock building window extending into the shadows on the back of the dockside cabin cruiser. ALL COVER DEFECTS ARE VISIBLE IN THE PHOTO.
