J. Holbrook & Co., Utica, NY - Little French Boy Capturing Brownie - San Jose, California, Shoe Merchant

1880's Victorian fantasy French language chromolithographic advertising trade card for H. J. Holbrook & Co., a company who manufactured "Ladies Fine Shoes" in Utica NY. On the back is the business name and address of a San Jose, California dealer for Holbrook's shoes.

This is one of a series of trade cards for American companies featuring French fantasy chromolithograph images set against a rich gold gilt background, with French language captions. This one, captioned "un demanagement" (i.e., "a removal"), features the image of a little French boy in his nightshirt standing on his bed, holding his blanket high over his head, about to capture a small dapperly dressed "brownie" laying against his pillow.

H. J. Holbrook & Co., was a major manufacturer of ladies' shoes located in Utica who marketed its shoes as far away as California, between the 1870s and 1882, when it went out of business.

Stock trading card measures 4-1/2" high x 3" wide.

PHOTO NOTE: Small defects are exaggerated by the scanning process, and many are barely noticeable when viewed in person. The photos also distort the clarity of the images and sometimes the intensity of the colors. The muted "grainy" look is a distortion. The colors are often more vivid and the clarity greater when viewed in person.

CONDITION NOTE: LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE ATTACHED PHOTOS. Condition is accurately shown. This stock trade card is in very good condition. The images on the front are very clean. The gilt in the background is an uneven color, but not soiled. There is one reinforced lower right corner crease, and one small repaired tear in the lower margin. Corners are only very slightly blunted. The white borders are lightly soiled. The back has age discoloration, small ink spots, and light pencil writing along the top, but little, if any, glue residue. The advertising copy is complete, sharp and readable. ALL DEFECTS ARE VISIBLE IN THE PHOTOS.
