Hayes was born and lived his entire life in Ohio. During the Civil War, Hayes was wounded several times, earning a reputation for bravery in combat, and was promoted to the rank of major general. After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress from 1865 to 1867; Governor of Ohio from 1867 to 1871; and was elected to a third term in 1875.
In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most hotly disputed elections in American history. Although he lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, Hayes won the presidency after a congressional commission awarded him twenty disputed electoral votes. As a result of the Compromise of 1877, the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes's election in exchange for the end of the United States military occupation of the South.
As president, he presided over the end of Reconstruction; and was a reformer who began the effort for civil service reform. After one term Hayes retired to his home in Ohio, where he remained an advocate of educational and social reform.
