SAINT LOUIS c1885 Victorian era vintage furniture advertising trade card featuring owl and frog images - advertisement on back is for the Windsor Folding Bed, sold by F. J. Comstock & Co., furniture company, on Fourth Street in Saint Louis. Card features an extraordinarily charming image of a family of hoot owls – a loving mamma and papa teaching their two little baby to fly – and possibly hunt - as grandma looks on.... and as a frightened family of pond frogs cower in fear below! It looks like one baby owl has just been recovered, and the other about to try his luck. Card is captioned "Restoration" along the top left margin.
The Windsor Folding Bed was a Victorian hide-a-bed similar to the famous "Murphy Bed" of New York City apartment fame – but whereas the Murphy Bed was built into the wall and disguised as a closet, the Windsor Bed was disguised as a heavy, ornate free-standing piece of Victorian furniture such as a dresser, chifferobe, wardrobe or armoire.
Exceptionally detailed, high-quality unsigned chromolithograph art, with no lithographer identified. Standard card stock measures 4" high x 3" wide.
PHOTO NOTE: Small defects are exaggerated by the scanning process, and many are barely noticeable when viewed in person. The photos also distort the clarity of the images and sometimes the intensity of the colors. The muted "grainy" look is a distortion. The colors are often more vivid and the clarity greater when viewed in person.
CONDITION NOTE: LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE ATTACHED PHOTO. Condition is accurately shown. In wonderful - almost perfect condition – on both sides. The front is very clean, and the back has only a little light glue residue from the album. No creases or tears. ALL DEFECTS ARE VISIBLE IN THE PHOTO.
