Early 1909 Zane Grey novel, "The Last Trail". The father of the western novel, Zane Grey, 1872-1939, was born in Zanesville, Ohio. He wrote 58 Western novels and almost 30 other books. Over 130 films have been based on his work.
The Last Trail is a good example of popular American literature written in the early 20th Century. But it is a somewhat atypical Zane Grey novel in that it is set in what was the first "American West" - the frontier wilderness west of the Appalachians in what is now Ohio and West Virginia. Jonathan Zane and Lewis Whetzel are two frontiersmen that protect the settlement from "Injuns". When Helen, the daughter of one of the settlers, is abducted, Jonathan and Whetzel search the wilderness to get her back. If Jonathan rescues Helen, he will declare his love to her at last and settle down or, if he fails to bring her back, he will die trying. Either way this will be Jonathan Zane's "last trail".
