The German Evangelical Synod of North America was a Protestant Christian denomination based in the American Midwest, and founded in 1840. It was made up of German Protestant congregations of mixed Lutheran and Reformed heritage. In 1934 it then merged with the Reformed Church in the United States to form the Evangelical and Reformed Church (which itself merged with the Congregational Christian Churches denomination in 1957 to create the United Church of Christ).
To provide curriculum materials for the parochial schools and Sunday schools, the Synod authorized the publication of many Christian books, including hymnals and the Biblische Geschichten (Bible Stories). In 1866, Reverend Adolph Baltzer (1817-1880) was elected the Synod's first president, where he remained until his death. As stated by Baltzer, the Bible alone!" would be the guiding principles and articles of faith of the Evangelical Synod.
