19th Century William Brownfield "Nile" Relief Moulded Jug - image 1 of 12

A beautiful William Brownfield "Nile" jug in white stoneware with brown enameled background. It has its original Brittania metal lid. It has a British Registry diamond mark for June 10, 1870. Brownfield was based in Cobridge, Staffordshire and, as far as relief-moulded jugs are concerned, he must rate as one of the most prolific of Victorian potters. This is perhaps his most famous jug and it merited a full color page in R. K. Henrywood's "Relief-Moulded Jugs, 1820-1900" on page 150. It is also pictured in black and white on page 141. The jug is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It measures 8 inches high (20.5 cm) to the top of the lid.
