DESCRIPTION: In excellent condition, this is a fine representation of Vista Alegre porcelain and its remarkable history. From Portugal, this piece is made of exceptional quality. The colors are heavily applied with depth, and the color combination is beautiful. On white porcelain, the jar features a lovely shade of solid blue that is the background for pink apple blossom camelias that are detailed with precision and expertise. The florals encircle the jar with handpainted fine brush strokes of white accents. The lid continues this same pattern and is capped with gold finial. Gold trim is applied by hand to the lid and jar at 5 diameter points to further illustrate the focus toward artistry and perfection. (NOTE: The white spots on photos are camera flash; unavoidable because of the high quality glaze finish).
The Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory was founded in llhavo Portugal, 1824 by Jose Ferreira Pinto Basto. His son, Augusto, visited the Sevres Porcelain Factory in France to study porcelain clay composition and manufacturing processes used in 1832. The Vista Alegre company evolved, survived difficult social and economic times, decorating trends, and remained solvent enough to enter the 20th century as a leading competitor of fine porcelain worldwide. Production included wares for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and a prestigious clientele as well as exhibited works in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and Palace of Milan. With significant and noted importance, Vista Alegre opened a historical museum and has a Collector’s Club.
The brand continues through a 2001 merger of Vista Alegre Group with the Atlantis Group and in 2009 via acquisition of Visabeira Group. Remaining steadfast through decades of manufacturing history, Vista Alegre is a very important part of the Portuguese culture and artistic identity.
