Antique Coalport Dessert Cup & Saucer Set of TWO, England ca 1890 - image 1 of 9

DESCRIPTION: This is a fine example of historical significance and early Coalport manufacturing and design. The saucers are backstamped ‘Bruff’s Patent No 23835-09’ indicating this design named ‘Indian Tree’ was newly patented. “Indian Tree’ was based on Chinese art and original to the Coalport China Company under the ownership of Peter Schuyler Bruff and his manager son, Charles Bruff.

Variants of this design are produced by nearly all British china manufacturing companies as well as American china decorators such as Pickard China. Its popularity remains to this day and can be found within the design line of the finest organizations.
The oversized saucer in this set is for dessert or luncheon. The colors are vibrant in geometric and smart, complemented with an inner circle of intricate geometric design that separates the floral aspect of this famous design.

A Bit of History. Peter Schuyler Bruff (1812-1900) was an English civil engineer and visionary, now described as the Richard Branson of his time. His successful achievements included creating and developing the seaside resort town of Clacton on Sea. He founded the Easter Union Railway as a means to support development and growth, and in 1880, he purchased Coalport China Works. He owned and managed the operation and re-established it as a limited liability company (LLC) The Coalport China Company in 1889 when management shifted to his son. The company was a successful exporter of trade to the United States and Canada. When business declines in 1925 it was sold to Cauldon Potteries.

WHY I LIKE IT: The historical significance and origin of ‘Indian Tree’ is on perfect display in this set and if a collector of this pattern, I would consider this to be an important addition to your collection.
