DESCRIPTION: At 131 year of age, this rare antique represents the beloved Royal Worcester lineage of fine porcelain pieces and collectibles. Since 1751 when Dr. John Wall and William Davis founded The Worcester Tonquin Manufactory, their efforts to establish high-quality porcelain production and luxurious pieces was a great success. Today, we enjoy beautiful Royal Worcester porcelain, both past and present, of spectacular and lasting design.

On ivory colored ground "Blush Ivory", the fancy shape of this Royal Worcester nappy is intricate, detailed, and an absolute masterpiece. It resembles a shell, a natural organic style that gained attention during the early 1900s. Designed upon a blank with ornate scallops and a fluted shape, the porcelain canvas of which fine artwork is painted captures the lost art of china painting.

Amidst the blank’s intricate shape, fine brush strokes have created florals in vibrant colors of purple and blue, accented with thick leaves in green and brown. With precision and a steady brushstroke, 24 karat gold details were added in abundance.

The curved upswept handle is decorated with gold strokes and anchor this delicate porcelain piece. The results are captivating and a testament to talented artists that paved the way for today’s Royal Worcester designs and creations.

WHY I LIKE IT: I consider handpainted china to be original works of fine art. This Royal Worcester antique piece, from the 19th century, is a rarity.

Backstamp(s): Royal Worcester (in purple overglaze) ca. 1889. Impressed 03. XRL in black, 6 in red.

CIRCA: 1889

DIMENSIONS: 5-1/2” x 5” x 1-3/4” H

CONDITION: Very Good. No loss of paint; brilliant glazed sheen; minor gold rubbing. There are a total of eight tiny nicks on the perimeter scalloped edge: 4 on the front and 4 on the back. We feel this does not detract from the significance of the piece because of its age and overall very good condition.
