DESCRIPTION: Created by one of Pickard’s master artists, M. Rost LeRoy, this antique handpainted Celery Dish is outstanding.
The Celery Dish features a design of vibrant red currants, specific in color and design of the beloved Pickard ”Autumn Currants” pattern. On a variegated ground that blends into white porcelain, red currants are placed in multiple clusters that complements the shape of this slender oval dish. The abundant leaves are painted in color depth that brings life to the berries connected with three wide stems radiating from near-center.
The tabbed handles of the Celery Dish are heavily gilded; the gold continues to create a very wide outer band that defines the outer edge. The inside border features unexpected swirls of pastel colors and adds design interest. Specific to this artist, the pattern is further embellished with raised white paste randomly placed along the border and interior.
The exterior of this Celery Dish is of a beautiful green ombre color.
About the Artist. M. Rost LeRoy worked for Pickard (1898-1905) and Donath (about 1906). LeRoy was a prolific producer of wide variety of traditional subjects including cherry sprays, strawberry sprays, apple blossoms, and gooseberries. His compositions included dark backgrounds and gold borders with raised paste and were considered some of Pickard’s best in this style. (source: Collector’s Encyclopedia of Pickard China, Alan B.
